All formats render locally. The server doesn't have to burn subtitles into the video.
Trident supports rendering ASS subtitles, so styling comes through intact:

Switch subtitle tracks during playback without restarting the video stream. Text and image-based tracks such as PGS and VobSub can both be changed in place.
If a file contains multiple subtitle tracks, Trident lists them all with:
Open the Playback Menu (swipe down during playback) to choose a track.
External subtitle files exposed by your media server are picked up alongside embedded tracks. They're marked External in the track list.
If subtitles are out of sync with the video, open the Playback Menu's Subtitles tab and use Timing to shift them up to 5 seconds either way while you watch. The offset applies to the current file only.
Position raises subtitles off the bottom edge, useful for keeping captions clear of letterbox bars or burned-in text. Styled ASS subtitles keep their typesetting anchored when repositioned.

If characters appear garbled, the file likely uses an unsupported encoding. Re-encoding as UTF-8 fixes most cases.
